Multiple disciplines, agencies and industrial sectors have databases, methods and frameworks that if combined through a virtual organization would yield a deeper understanding of the dynamics and consequences of climate change in urban areas. Building on established partnerships, the National Center of Excellence, the US CDC, US EPA, NOAA, DOE and regional governments have come together to create an innovative cyber-infrastructure virtual organization that will enable members to rethink and redesign on-going and future research of complex urban climate-engineered systems. This organization will provide a practical and user-friendly platform for domestic and global stakeholders to more effectively prioritize resources that address adaptation, vulnerability and mitigation strategies.
This new project under initial development aims to improve the effectiveness of community protection efforts by showing how modeling methods may be used to engage stakeholders, integrate diverse data sources, anticipate likely consequences, and support eventual policy decisions. The preparedness modeling will raise collective standards of evidence and critical thinking; combine information from disparate sources; foster effective actions, and make stakeholder values (and potential trade-offs) more transparent (Golden et al., 2007).
